Thank man. Ya. It took me a long time. In fact, I had search for a replacement car for over .. say many year. Kept procastinating. C4GP is something that caught my eye a few months back. However, the funny gearbox and citroen's reputation hold me back.. Further held back by friends who kept telling me.... if u buy conti car, don't buy a lousy one like Citroen. Nevertheless, I am impressed by the fellowship of citroen drivers. Decide to take a plunge and hope for the best. Hope that the COE don't down too much too..

we all have to go through the kind of peer pressure and scoffing that you have described :-)

if we come through, we know we really have backbone and independent thought and are not lemmings :-)

Hi xelacar,

Conti cars are generally more sophisticated than Jap and Korean cars. Being more sophisticated means that they have their unique set of problems depending on the brand and make that you are going for.
Even for BMW, which I happened to own one (3 series) some years ago came with a long list of problems. I have experienced calling the BMW road assist quite a few times during my 3 years of ownership.

I believe by reading through the threads in this forum, you should have an idea of what is the common list of problems for Citroen cars.

My thought is this. I agree that conti car are more sophisticated. Some are made better than others.. I do know US car are trash cos i have driven a few before while on overseas trips. I used to think Korea cars are not equally bad. My view changed in recent times. Jap cars.. especially toyotas are rock solid reliable and hassle free. I am tempted to just replace with another toyota since i have already driven two so far. Nevertheless, I am really impressed with C4's interior especially for the price.. Hope that it is not mistake.

Hi Xelacar,
My colleague's Renault Megene has gearbox problem which was far more problematic than the others. The gearbox has automatically downshifted the gear when it suppose to upshift. The sudden drop in speed nearly caused an accident on the highway.
Both my father-in-law's and my eldest brother-in-law's Merc often have over-heating problem. My previous BMW too has that problem. My youngest brother has a list of problems with his 2yr old Pegueot 308 glasstop.
However, each one of them are still sticking on with their conti cars is becos of the driving experience and the comfort level these cars deliver as compared to the Korean and Jap ones.

In general, I think Conti cars tend to have more gadgets and safety measures as standards. e.g. three point seat belt for 2nd and third row. Korea cars are catching up and the usability is quite ok. However, it is still a trust issue. Jap car can be comfortable too but it is just overpriced due to high yen. Might as well pay a little more for what my friend term as cheap conti.

In terms of build quality and performance, I will hand it to Volvo. The price is also getting more reasonable these days.. but above my budget that I am willing to spend ;(

hi xelacar,

although i don't list them in my signature, i have owned (over several years) an S80 2.8 T6 and an XC90 2.5T

Volvo DOES NOT have excellent build quality.

my XC90 squeaked untraceably from day-one, despite repeated visits to the apologetic staff.

my S80 developed axle wear and bearing / steering / knuckle issues after a few years' ownership.

and Volvo performance is only good in a straight line. throw them into a bend and a C5 will easily show them a clean pair of heels, and handle more tidily to boot. (it's not just me saying it, this has been verified by a German slalom test)

I have tried XC70 and was really impressed when I drove it. hmm... I guess probably ownership is probably speaks better of its actual build quality. Could it be the authorized distributor's workshop problem too?

Hope that cycle and carriage for citroen is better.
