Chances of scrapping my car is high as per calculation.
My parf rebate is abt $10k.
Adding another $15k for renewal is consider high if i wanna renew it.
That makes my car's depreciation at $5k per year for 5 yrs with 10% increasing roadtax each year.
If scrap it after 1 yrs, the depre $13k/yr
If scrap it after 2 yrs, the depre $8k/yr
If scrap it after 3 yrs, the depre $6.3k/yr
If scrap it after 4 yrs, the depre $5.5k/yr
If scrap it after 5 yrs, the depre $5k/yr

Selling it maybe an option but doubt anyone would wanna buy it as the mileage is super high.

1.5 month to go.
In the mean time, will look for cars with 2-3 yrs coe before the right car appears in the market.

May I know what is the damage for the gearbox overhaul?
And the WS capable to the job?

mine started with a grinding sound at low rpm. So as it gets louder when stopping, the gear jerks. sometimes stuck at 3rd gear and sometimes at 2nd. Seems like it doesn't like go into gear 1. Neutral and Reverse has no sound and is perfectly fine. if you change to manual, the gears are fine but the grinding sound is there.

Gearbox over haul cost from $3k but be prepared to fork out at least 100% more as when they remove your gearbox, they will say things like:
"your gearbox cooler is leaking, have to replace as the coolant contaminate the gear oil. And since your gearbox is out, you better change your flywheel wheel seal which doesn't cost much. if not next time you change, have to remove gearbox again. it will cost you more."
"your lower engine mounting is wearing, you better replace as it might also affect your car performance."
"your spark plugs are not functioning well"
All we want is a piece of mind, so as their wish, all parts needed to change, just change.
All this takes about 7 working days.

After 3 months, my car become paralysed. cannot shift any gears then send back to them to check. found gearbox leaking badly. They say need 2nd overhaul.(under 1 year warranty)

Another 10 working days.
this time took out gearbox and say my flywheel damaged which i see no sign of damaged. need to find a 2nd hand replacement and quoted me $1.2k. I was so frustrated with them as how can a 2nd hand flywheel cost so much? in the end paid a discounted price. after 2 weeks, flywheel still grinding.

I did mine at sin ming(some reputable GB specialist) which I am not satisfied with their workmanship.
To me, they just try and error on gearboxes, doesn't have the skill and workmanship to attend to our gearbox.
Eventually I think the actual problem lies in the flywheel and not the gearbox. A misdiagnosed wasted precious time and money. Even after 2nd overhaul, the gears are still not as good. Jerking still present..

My opinion is to skip the overhaul and move on to get a new car.
Wasted my time and $. I love my ride but need to move on. In the end, i scrapped it last December and got myself another C4.

thanks for sharing and give a view of the skill level of SG WS to overhaul our AL4 gearbox.
I ask this as I plan to renew my C4P which has the same AL4 gearbox.
There are advises from the net to avoid overhaul of gearbox or engine as the skilled mechanic are hard to find.
The alternative is to drop in a used gearbox from a reputable seller which reduce the risk to an acceptable level.
Enjoy your new French Lady!!

This shows that SG WS do not have the skill yet.

Plan to do 10k atf change to monitor the condition of the oil. Then will try out 20k as I am the 3rd owner of my current ride.

How about adding a atf cooler?
